Former Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen has joined Serie A side Roma on a season-long loan deal from Barcelona. The 30-year-old centre-back left the Emirates in the summer of 2014 for £15million, but injury kept him sidelined until the final game of his first season.
He has failed to nail down a starting place at the Nou Camp, and now joins Roma with the potential for a permanent move at the end of the season.
The Belgian played 21 times for Barcelona in his two years at the club, scoring once in the process.
Vermaelen’s move to the Stadio Olimpico is likely to free up room for Premier League target Kostas Manolas to leave the club.
