Lecce was founded in 1908 and thus has a long history, but the team has been a perpetual minnow in Italian soccer and spent most of its existence in the lower flights (even falling all the way down to the 4th division at one time). In fact, the squad has never even won a Serie B trophy of any kind. The team has never really even been a contender.

They did spend some short stints in Serie A in the 80s and 90s, but they have never been able to keep their head above the relegation zone for too long. After narrowly achieving promotion last year, it looks like history will repeat itself once again because Lecce is currently in a relegation position with only 8 matches remaining this season.

American Sports Doppleganger:

Lecce has some amazing fans who make a ton of noise at games despite the fact their squad hasn’t ever really given them much to make noise about. So, I will compare Lecce to the Chicago Cubs, who have diehard fans but have not won a title since 1908. Wait a minute, that was the same year Lecce was founded in Italy. I smell another curse!
