Hours after Manchester United fell to another sorry loss in the Premier League, Romelu Lukaku bagged his eighth and ninth league goals of the season on Saturday – as Inter Milan came from behind to edge Bologna 2-1.
Lukaku knocked in a tap-in and cooly converted a penalty at the death to become the first Inter player to score nine goals in their first 11 Serie A games since Ronaldo in 1997-98.
The Brazilian ended that season with 25 goals as Inter finished second behind Juventus – results Lukaku and boss Antionio Conte hope to better this season.
Inter have only lost once at the start of this season, and are keeping pace with Juventus at the top. They sit one point behind the Italian champions and six clear of Roma and Atalanta.
Inter boss Conte has long been an admirer of Lukaku and wanted to sign him as Chelsea boss. The Italian criticised the striker’s fitness earlier this season, but he has been as reliable as ever in front of goal.
Inter travel to Borussia Dortmund this week, looking to all but seal their progression from the Champions League group stages.
