Roma, which will be making its fourth Boston-area appearance since 1972, stands in second place with a 21-6-2 record (65 points). The Giallorossi’s president is Boston-based James Pallotta, who also is a Celtics co-owner and heads Raptor Group Holdings.
“For years people were worried about friendly games and whether or not big players were going to be there,” said Relevent Sports chairman Charlie Stillitano, a tournament organizer.
“Now, they see teams taking it seriously. ICC has grown enormously and they are paying for a real event. We explain to the teams, fans are paying hard-earned money and you have to bring your best ‘A’ game with you. Teams recognize this and know this. It’s really changed. It’s no longer just a friendly.”
As part of the International Champions Cup, Roma will also play French side Paris Saint-Germain and English side Tottenham while the Bianconeri get to repeat their upcoming Champions League showdown with Barcelona, as well as Marco Verratti’s PSG.
