AC Milan manager Sinisa Mihajlovic has admitted he isn’t sure when Mario Balotelli will return to action, with the striker currently unable to run properly because of a groin problem.
The controversial Italian striker is attempting to rebuild his career at Milan following a disastrous campaign at Liverpool last season where he scored just a solitary Premier League goal and looked rather disinterested at times.
Balotelli thrived during his previous stint at Milan, but has struggled to make an impact this season because of his injury problems and has only scored once this season, against Udinese last month.
“The groin pain comes and goes. The doctors are trying everything to solve the problem,” Mihajlovic said.
“He is working to strengthen the painful part, he’s trying everything but he can’t run. I don’t know when he can come back.”
When at his best, Balotelli’s combination of pace, power and adroit finishing can cause a multitude of problems for even the most well drilled defences. His passing is also impressive, as shown by his 74% pass accuracy in Serie A this season.
However, the 25-year-old is in danger of becoming more known for his off the field exploits than his achievements on the pitch.
The fact that he is seemingly unable to stay at a club for a prolonged period without becoming unsettled is testament to the fact that Balotelli is a rather chaotic character, who courts controversy everywhere he goes.
It had been hoped that this spell in Milan would enable him to finally focus on his football again, but so far, through no fault of his own, matters haven’t worked out as hoped.
The forward has struggled in duels this season, winning just one of the eight
