In a deal that has Antonio Conte’s fingers all over it, and shows how bad Inter’s transfer policy was last summer, Inter are reportedly preparing to launch a €30million bid for Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku, and are prepared to throw in Ivan Perisic to sweeten the deal.
Including Perisic in the deal values Lukaku at around €65m. It was only 12 months ago that Inter turned down a €50m offer from Manchester United for Perisic, whose value was at an all-time high after a successful World Cup.
But instead of selling the Croatia winger then, Inter held onto him for a season too long, and now he is a thrown-in to make the deal work.
Lukaku struggled to hold down a place in the team under manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, making 45 appearances for United in all competitions last season, scoring 15 goals as they finished sixth in the Premier League.
Conte is widely expected to replace Luciano Spalletti as early as next week, if Inter secure a Champions League position this weekend.
Conte likes to play with with one target man, and he tried to sign Lukaku from Everton back in 2017, but Jose Mourinho and United beat him to his signature.
Now there is less demand for Lukaku whose poor first touch and inability to score against top teams makes him a risky replacement for Mauro Icardi.
What do you think of Lukaku? Would you swap Perisic plus cash for him?
