The feel good feeling that Inter fans have had since the win over Napoli vanished on Wednesday night as the Nerazzurri lost 1-0 at Genoa. That defeat, combined with a Totti inspired Roma victory leaves Roberto Mancini’s side 7 points behind Roma with four games to go. Inter will not be playing Champions League football next season.
The defeat typifies Inter’s problem all season. The inability to put together a string of consecutive good performances. Since the start of 2016, Inter have only won back-to-back league games twice, and have not strung together three consecutive wins since November. That is simply not good enough for a team that has Champions League aspirations.
The frustrating part of the Genoa defeat is that Inter created more than enough chances in the first half to win.
Inter started brightly and almost went ahead within the opening five minutes, when Ivan Perisic’s looping header was deflected towards goal and acrobatically clawed away by Eugenio Lamanna just under his crossbar. Marcelo Brozovic fired just over from the rebound.
Then around the half hour Inter had more chances to score but could not take advantage of any. First, Mauro Icardi’s low header was hacked off the line by Ezequiel Munoz, and then Perisic again drew a smart save from Lamanna when he stooped low at the far post to meet a Brozovic free-kick.
Then in the last 10 minutes Inter really piled on the pressure but Mauro Icardi placed a header just over the crossbar. Then Eder almost salvaged a point right at the death when he found half a yard in the area, but his left-footed effort was dragged just wide of the far post.
But by then Roma had won, and a point did nothing for Inter’s champions league aspirations.
So with four games to go Inter have nothing to play for. A Champions League place is beyond them while they are safely locked into a Europa League place.
