Inter Owner Would Be Happy With Third Place

thohir-interInter President Erick Thohir insists that the club’s primary objective this season remains securing Champions League qualification and is adamant the team are not thinking about winning Serie A.

Having lost just four times this season, the Nerazzurri currently sit third in the Serie A table, level on 39 points with second-placed Juventus and one point clear of Fiorentina in fourth.

Inter were in pole position to be crowned Serie A’s winter champions until their 1-0 defeat against Sassuolo at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza allowed Napoli to climb above them with a 5-1 demolition of Frosinone.

“Our goal remains qualifying for the Champions League,” Thohir said. “It is just the media and fans who are talking about the Scudetto. I don’t think we should panic.”

Thohir continued to admit his shock with the result and targeted a return to winning ways in the next game away to Atalanta before declaring his support for coach Roberto Mancini.

“Sunday’s match left us speechless, but this is football. We had a 50 per cent chance of winning and losing,” the Inter President said. “We attacked constantly but the ball refused to go into the net.

“I hope Mancini and the players respond immediately against Atalanta. He [Mancini] is a good coach and he will remain in charge next season.”

Do you agree with Thohir. Does third place mean this was a successful season for Inter?
