Former Real Madrid and Barcelona striker Robert Prosinecki has called Gonzalo Higuain ‘a little pig’ after the Argentine returned from his holidays overweight.
The 290year-old Higuain who has been criticised throughout his career about his weight, became Juventus’ most expensive signing after completing his £76 million move from Napoli in July.
He made his debut for Juve at the weekend Prosinecki admitted he was amazed by his fellow former Madrid man’s questionable physique, but has backed Massimiliano Allegri to get him fit and firing in time for the season opener against Fiorentina on August 20.
‘I was shocked to see Higuain, he is even more fat than me!’ he told Jutarnji List.
‘They paid 94 million [sic] for him and he’s arrived as a ‘little pig’!
‘I can imagine how shocked Allegri was, after he insisted on his signing. But they will make him fit soon.’
With the start of the Serie A season less than a fortnight away, that was both surprising and disappointing. Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri insisted that he was unconcerned by his new No.9’s physical condition.
“He’s like the others that returned late from the Euros: they’re a bit behind the rest.
“At the moment, we have two groups that are working at different speeds but this is normal.
“Besides, Gonzalo showed his quality in three or four passages of play. He just has to get to know his team-mates better – and vice versa.
“I don’t think he’s under any pressure, though. He started working with us 10 days ago and he’s training well.
“The important thing is to have a group of high-quality attackers so that we can give him time to work away.”
