Italy defender Fabio Cannavaro has called on his former team-mates Francesco Totti and Alesandro Nesta to come out of retirement and join the National team.
Both Totti and Nesta retired after Italy’s 2006 truimph to concentrate on their club careers but with all the big teams qualifying for the tournament in South Africa, Cannavaro is not taking any chances.
Italy who are the defending champions will be looking to be among a group of selected few nations that have retained the cup. According to FIFA, Italy are ranked number 4 in the world and they will be looking to win a 5th title to match Brazil’s record.
I personally think that both these players are vital to Italy’s title hope and that Marcello Lippi cannot afford to put them out of his squad. Although they might be ageing, their level of experience is unmatchable. The Azzurri who are largely dependant on their ageing stars are yet to make new introductions to their squad.
Being among the top seeds for the 2010 World cup is therefore no easy feat and the pressure will be on them to prove that wining the 2006 event was no fluke. Italy have always been known to be the master defenders however, 2010 will also give them an opportunity to show just how attack minded they can be.
