For a guy that hasn’t played a single minute this season, Gianluigi Buffon sure is popular. The former World Cup winning keeper and Juventus man can’t escape the headlines this season despite his serious back injury that has had laid him out for at least the first half of the season.
Buffon is one of these guys that has had such an excellent career that he is coveted by nearly every powerhouse team in the world. And regardless of what the Italian man truly desires, the rumors of his departure from Serie A football continue to be printed every single season. Manchester United has made it no secret that they would love to acquire the keeper to replace Edwin Van der Sarr this January or summer, but Buffon has always voiced his desire to remain with the Italian side.
And just to build the drama of the scenario a bit more, Buffon made headlines last week when he failed to attend the officials club picture being taken. His absence created a bit of a strange scenario when manager Luigi Delneri questioned the injured stars attitude towards the team, but Juventus general manager Beppe Marotta quickly rejected the renewed speculation that goalkeeper Buffon was looking to work elsewhere.
Marotta claimed that Buffon will likely rejoin the club for training very soon and the side’s GM also said that the club has no reason to “reproach” Buffon for his absence from the photograph due to the keeper having an excused absence due to attending an award ceremony elsewhere on the same day:
Juve have nothing to reproach Gigi for. Actually we expect him on the pitch as soon as possible. We didn’t speak to each other today nor did we see each other. But there is nothing strange in that. He is doing various training sessions and is not at Vinovo with us. I hope that in the next few days he gets in the car and comes to find us.
