AC Milan regained top spot in the Serie A after beating Parma 1-0 thanks to a sublime Andrea Pirlo strike. With more fixtures to be played today, the Rossoneri could find themselves back to 5 place if Inter, Lazio, Chievo and Brescia all win their matches.
However that is not stopping coach Allegri from milk their victory. Milan desperately needed that victory if they were to challenge Inter for the scudetto. Of course all eyes will turn to the Italian derby tonight when Inter host Juventus at the San Siro.
Milan will be hoping that the Bianconeri can do them a favour by beating an Inter side that last lost at the San Siro 2 years ago. Ironically, it was Juventus who beat them then.
Juventus are coming into this match after impressive displays in Europe and in the league. With Samuel Eto’o also in top form, this fixture is the highlight match of the week.
Back to Milan and Allegri expressed delight in grabbing all 3 points on offer yesterday despite a late onslaught from the home side. Speaking to Skysport, this is what he had to say.
“It’s nice to see my side top of the league. We played a great first half this evening and deserved our lead at the break.
“In the second period, Parma came fighting back and I think we dropped the tempo a little at times.
“Overall I was happy with the manner in which the boys regained control in the dying minutes. It was understandable that we wouldn’t be able to keep up our early pace for the entire 90 minutes but we need to learn to close out games.”
This was the second time that Allegri started Robinho and he maintained that his diamond formation is working.
“I was pleased with the way my side utilised the diamond [formation] this evening and given that it led to our first win on the road this term, it certainly worked for us on the night.”
