According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Frank de Boer will use a 4-3-3 formation when Inter travel to Chievo Verona this weekend in their Serie A opener this weekend.
As we have seen glimpses off in preseason, Inter’s attacking four of Banega; Perisic; Candreva and Icardi are as good as anyone on Serie. With pace on the wings and Banega pulling the strings in midfield, Icardi should be able to get 20+ goals this season.
Inter might need all those goals if they are to qualify for the Champions League and defensively there are still so many problems.
Because they have predicted a 4-3-3- formation, with Perisic; Candreva and Icardi up-front, that means a midfield three of Kondogbia, Medel, Banega. I am not a fan of this because as we saw against Celtic the further away from Icardi, Banega is, the less influence he has on the game.
The defensive midfield pairing of Kondogbia and Medel have yet to impress. They don’t do an adequate job protecting the back four, or dominating the midfield battles. This area is FDB’s biggest challenge this season.
The backline of Nagatomo, Ranocchia, Miranda, D’Ambrosio will keep FDB and Inter fans up at night. Miranda is the only one who should be starting this weekend, and Inter will not finish in the top three if Nagatomo, Ranocchia, and D’Ambrosio are starting more than 15 games this season.
So the predicted Inter likely starting XI is (4-3-3): Handanovic; Nagatomo, Ranocchia, Miranda, D’Ambrosio; Kondogbia, Medel, Banega; Perisic; Icardi; Candreva
