Serie A Early Joy In Champions League

After having plenty criticism in the last few seasons after plenty disappointing results in Europe, Italian teams can have a big smile for the moment as they have three representatives in the next stage of Champions League, which is the biggest numbers compared to other countries.

After Ac Milan and Inter Milan already confirmed their qualification in previous week, Napoli confirmed them in the final group match by beating Villarreal 2-0, thanks to the second half goals from Gokhan Inler and also Marek Hamsik.

Napoli’s victory over the Spaniard didn’t actually arrived in an easy fashion as there were tense all around especially since in the other match, Manchester City were leading over Bayern Munich in the first half. The difficult situation even forced the Partenopei’s coach, Walter Mazzarri, using a drastic measure to motivate his team by getting himself sent off from the pitch due to protesting Villarreal players’ attempt in slowing the game.

However, when Inler’s long range effort found the back of Villarreal’s net, things began to take place for Napoli, confidence emerged again and it eventually led to the second goal scored by Hamsik, which pretty much sealed their passaged. It wasn’t actually a super party on the pitch since the Partenopei were playing outside of their vicious San Paolo stadium, but still it was a total celebration for the Naples side, who have been expecting this achievement for quite sometime.

Having three teams in 16th round of the Champions League obviously is a good precedent for Italian football, especially in times where economic issues remain the major threat which troubled star players from entering the peninsula. This success will at least give a significant acknowledgment over the quality of Italian teams, which have been given pretty negative remarks in the last few years especially after a certain calciopoli scandal that hit the country in 2006.

However, the current success from Italian representatives in the Champions League can’t be taken for granted as just yet since the drawing could obviously troubled the good work which the likes of Ac Milan, Inter and Napoli have done so far. Although having more representatives than the other leagues doesn’t really mean that Italian trio are the best out there, still this could be a great advertisement for the Serie A especially in proving a point to UEFA on maintaining their Europe coefficient points especially for Champions League teams.
