Roma Lose 3-0 To Shakhtar

Roma are out of the Champions League after losing 3-0 to Shakhtar in a freezing night in Donetsk.

It was always going to be a tough task for Roma to overcome a 3-2 deficit from the first leg, especially against a side that has not lost at home for 55 games.

But even after Hubschman made it 1-0 with a backheel following Willan’s cross from the left, Roma still had chances to get back into the tie and got earned a penalty for a push on Borriello, but the ex-Milan striker’s spot kick was too close to the keeper Pyatov who saved well.

To all intents and purposes the game was over soon after when the English referee Howard Webb sent Mexes off with a harsh second yellow card in the 41st minute. Roma then lost their heads with DeRossi no less aiming an elbow at Srna which wasn’t seen by the referee. The right back was booked for protesting. It was 1-0 at half time, which, when added to being 4-2 down on aggregate, Borriello’s missed penalty, and Mexes’ red card, didn’t bode well for the hopes of the giallorossi.

In the 2nd half, Shakhtar secured victory with a right foot shot from the impressive Willan, one of Shakhtar’s many unknown stars. There was still time for a bad Borriello foul which went unpunished. Shakhtar, who from then on passed the ball around in triumphant fashion, go through to the quarter finals for the first time.

Roma conceded again after a Rosi error left Eduardo, the former Arsenal player, with an open goal.

All in all a disappointing European campaign for Roma this season, as it has been for most of the Italian teams.
