The relationship between Napoli and Gonzalo Higuain is in danger of falling apart after the striker decided not to extend his contract.
Higuain almost single handily carried Napoli to second place in the table last season with a record breaking goal-scoring season of 36 goals in 35 Serie A appearances.
The Argentine striker has been linked with a move to PSG, Arsenal and Chelsea this summer, despite the massive €94 million release clause and the fact that he still has two years left on his current deal.
Napoli have been hoping (wishing?) that they could sign Higuain to a new contract instead of selling him, but his brother, who also acts at his agent, claims that is something they are not interested in.
“Gonzalo [Higuain] won’t renew his contract with Napoli,” Nicolas Higuain told Radio Continental.
“Napoli are currently asking for the payment of his release clause as a condition for his departure, but Gonzalo and I decided not to extend the deal.
“We’ll see what happen next year, we could even wait until the contract’s expiry date.
The ball in now in Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis’s court. Does he cash in on Higuain this summer, when his value will never be higher, or does he keep the goal scoring machine for at least one more season?
The Argentine international has scored 91 goals in 146 matches in all competitions since signing from Real Madrid three seasons ago.
