Mancini Does Not Rule Out Selling Inter Stars This Summer

robymancio2Some interesting comments from the Nerazzurri boss in his pre-match press conference on Friday about what Inter will do in the transfer market this summer.

Roberto Mancini was making the point that Inter have built “a good foundation” but have to strengthen certain areas this summer.

“The Champions League would have been important for our club,” Mancini acknowledged in his pre-Empoli Press conference.

“But it doesn’t mean that with this tournament [Europa League] we have to tear everything up. The difference isn’t that big [to Roma] we just have to improve like we did this season.

“We finished the transfer campaign with a surplus, we weren’t passive. We did our best with our means and the team is good.

“The team has a good foundation and some fixed points as opposed to last year. We have to strengthen where we’re lacking a little, but that also depends on the market.

“The current team has a good foundation, those who come in will have to be ready, for big games too.

“Funds for the transfer market? The President [Erick Thohir] will tell me, then we’ll see how we operate.”

So far so good, then Mancini was asked if some of the bigger names in the squad be sold to fund new purchases as this is what he said:

“I don’t know, none of us had thought about selling [Mateo] Kovacic, Hernanes, [Fredy] Guarin and [Xherdan] Shaqiri, but those sales happened for certain reasons.

“Sometimes these kind of transfers are necessary. It will depend on the club, but I think we can keep them [the big names].”

So far Inter have been focusing on the Bosman market with potential summer signings of Tonny Vilhena, Caner Erkin and Ever Banega. Those are the sort of transfers that Inter’s bankers like.

And that is the big unknown with the Nerazzurri’s transfer activity this summer. Inter are hemorrhaging money and will the bankers force the club to sell an Icardi to help reduce the debt? I wonder in retrospect whether Mancini wanted to sell Kovacic, Hernanes, Guarin or Shaqiri last season or whether the bankers forced the club to accept these deals?
