Inter Milan Fire Stefano Pioli

With only two points in their last seven games, the position of manager Stefano Pioli had become untenable and on Tuesday, Inter announced that Pioli had been fired, with three games left in the season.

The club wrote in the statement,

“Inter Milan announces that it has parted ways with coach Stefano Pioli and his technical staff.

“Inter thanks Stefano and his team for their dedication and hard work at the club over the last six months in what has proven to be a difficult season.”

“The club will begin planning now for the next season.”

U-19 head coach Stefano Vecchi will take over for Inter’s final three games of the season, against Sassuolo, Lazio and Udinese. This will be the second time this season Vecchi has filled in as Inter’s acting manager this season.

It is somewhat fitting that at almost the exact same time that bitter rivals Juventus reached the Champions Leagye final that Inter announced that they were firing their third manager this season.

Pioli was hired in November with the team in 12th place and he had Inter fans dreaming of a top three finish when immediately won 12 wins in 15 matches, including a seven-match win streak as part of that run and reaching as high as fourth in the Serie A table.

But that was the high point of the season as Pioli’s inability to beat the teams above them in the table meant that the Nerazzurri were always chasing Roma and Napoli.

Eventually questionable team selections and poor in-match substitutions doomed Pioli as Inter have collapsed towards the end of the season, winless now in almost two months.
