Inter go back on top of Serie A

Champions Inter claimed top spot with a 3-1 win over Napoli at the San Siro on Wednesday. Samuel Eto’o opened the scoring after just two minutes with his strike partner Diego Milito adding a second three minutes later for his fifth league goal of the season. Lucio added a third in the 32nd minute with Ezequiel Lavezzi grabbing a consolation five minutes later.

Elsewhere Genoa and Juventus shared the spoils in a four-goal thriller at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris on Thursday night to round off the fifth round of matches in Serie A. Vincenzo Iaquinta put Juve ahead in the sixth minute, but Giandomenico Mesto replied after half-an-hour. Hernan Crespo put the home side ahead in the 75th minute of a pulsating game, but Juve, who had two goals disallowed for offside, levelled with three minutes remaining through David Trezeguet.

The result maintains the Bianconeri’s unbeaten start to the season and takes them back level with Inter Milan at the top of Serie A while Genoa move up to fourth, three points adrift of the joint league leaders.

Sampdoria went into their game against Fiorentina at the Stadio Artemio Franchi with a 100 per cent record from four games but lost as Stevan Jovetic (24) and Alberto Gilardino (71) helped the Viola up to fourth, two points behind the Genoese club.

Newly-promoted Parma stayed fifth as they claimed an impressive 2-1 win over Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico. Bulgarian forward Valeri Bojinov gave the visitors a 24th-minute lead but Lazio levelled through Mauro Zarate’s 42nd-minute penalty. However, Parma were back in front before the interval as Nicola Amoruso converted another spot-kick three minutes later.

Udinese moved up one place to seventh as they beat AC Milan 1-0 at the Stadio Friuli. Serie A’s top scorer Antonio di Natale took his tally to seven for the season with the only goal in the 22nd minute and a sorry night for Leonardo’s team was compounded by Mathieu Flamini’s dismissal with six minutes left.

Chievo climbed two places to eighth as they drew 0-0 at Siena as Bari dropped to 12th with a 1-0 defeat at home to Cagliari. The Sardinians claimed their first win of the season thanks to Nene’s 77th-minute goal.

Francesco Totti rescued a point for Roma in a 3-3 draw at Palermo and Bologna earned their first win of the season with a 2-0 victory at home to Livorno courtesy of goals from Daniele Portanova (36) and Marco di Vaio (53).

Atalanta remain bottom of the standings after a goalless draw with Catania in Bergamo.
