Inter Have €50m Bid For Edinson Cavani Turned Down By PSG

cavani-goalIn a clear indication that they intend to sell captain Mauro Icardi this month, Inter have had a €50 million bid for striker Edinson Cavani turned doe by the French champions.

Corriere dello Sport reports that the Inter took the opportunity of the match against PSG last week in the International Champions Cup to meet with the PSG directors about Cavani and make their offer for the Uruguay striker.

The 29-year-old Cavani, who joined PSG from Napoli in 2013 for €64 million, is seen by the Inter board as one the few players that could replace Icardi, who scored 16 goals in Serie A last season.

While PSG Sporting director Patrick Kluivert is said to be reluctant to sell their star striker, having already lost Zlatan Ibrahimovic to Manchester United, he is reportedly interested in former Juve starlet Alvaro Morata as a replacement for Cavani, which means this deal could drag on for a while until PSG find a replacement for their No 0.

But the big question is why would Inter essentially swap Icardi for Cavani? You are trading a 23-year-old striker with a lot of upside for a 29-year-old striker. Why?

The issue surrounding Icardi this summer is that he wants paid, and Inter are somewhat reluctant to give him another pay raise just 12 months after his latest one. But Cavani is on €14 million a year at PSG. That is more than 4X what Inter are currently paying Icardi and more than 3X what Inter are proposing to pay Icardi.

First of all Inter cannot afford to pay €14m in wages for Cavani. They can not even afford to pay €7m. Again, why would you break your wage structure for a 29-year-old striker and not your 23-year-old captain and top goalscorer?

It’s a deal that makes no sense to me. What do you think of Inter spending that sort of money for Cavani?
