Juventus paid Huguain’s €90 million release clause to get the striker from Napoli, a figure that the CIES Football Observatory calculates was a massive €23.8 million over his market value.
Interestingly the three most “overpriced” players this summer; Higuain, Eric Bailly from Villarreal to Manchester United, and Kévin Gameiro from Sevilla to Barcelona, all were concluded when their release clause were met.
On the list of the top 20 overpriced deals four involved Serie A clubs. The Higuain deal and Nikola Maksimović to Napoli from Torino involved just Italian sides while Marcos Alonso to Chelsea, Paul Pogba to Manchester United involved Italian sides selling to Premier League clubs.
What do you think of the list?
