History:

Bologna has a very rich history of excellent play, but the squad’s recent results have been rather poor. Since their founding in 1909, they have won seven Serie A titles, but their last championship came back in the early 1960s. They also have won the Coppa Italia twice, but they have failed to hoist that trophy in approximately 40 years.

Last year, some Americans almost bought the team, but the deal was eventually canceled and the club was sold to a local business group instead. Their front office is led by Francesca Menarini, who is only the second woman to ever be the top executive at a Serie A club. They have tried to fight off relegation this year, but are near the drop zone.

American Sports Doppleganger:

Bologna reminds me of the Philadelphia Flyers of the NHL. Like the Flyers, Bologna was a strong team early in its history but has not tasted success in nearly 40 years. Both teams have rich histories and legendary venues, but neither team has been able to capture the league championship despite having fantastic fan bases.
