AS Roma

Inter Milan’s former striker Adriano is in an enviable position. The Brazilian International who quit the Nerazzurri last year citing personal reasons, has drawn interest from Europe’s elite clubs.

Now playing for Flamengo in Brazil’s Paulista championship, Adriano in fine form and getting better.

Barcelona, Real Madrid and Roma are all keen on landing his signature this is according to his agent Gilmar Rinaldi. “Adriano can return to Europe in a team that has Brazilian players. It could be Roma, Real Madrid or Barcelona” Rinaldi said.  Adriano’s superb form for Flamengo has seen him score 24 goals so far.

AC Milan’s 3-1 victory over Atalanta was overshadowed by striker Alexander Pato’s injury. The Brazil international came off 10 minutes from the end after clutching his thigh in what looked like a hamstring injury. This is terrible news for Leonardo as he will need all his troops when Milan travel to Manchester for their return Champion’s League fixture against United.

Pato scored a brace to help his team stay in hot pursuit of league leaders and cross town neighbours Inter Milan in the race for the scudetto.

End Of The Road For Roma

by Philip Mboya

Roma were eliminated from Europe’s second tier club competition last night when they lost 2-3 to visiting Panathinaikos at the Olympic Stadium in Rome. The Giallarosso were again beaten by a similar margin which effectively knocked them out and handed Panathinaikos a comfortable 6-4 aggregate win.

A goal would have been enough to ensure a safe passage for the Romans  and things were looking good for the Giallorosso when Riise gave them the lead in the 11th minute after his side were awarded an indirect free-kick. His goal bound shot however, deflected off defender Stergos Marinos to beat Alexandros Tzorvas.

Pato Seals Win For Milan

by Philip Mboya

AC Milan moved up to 2nd in the Serie A after beating Fiorentina 2-1 at the Artemio Franchi stadium last night. Milan are now just 4 points behind league leaders and city rivals Inter who also beat their European opponents Chelsea by a similar goal margin at the San Siro in the first leg of the Champions league knockout stage yesterday.

Milan went down in the 14th minute when their former striker Alberto Gilardino tapped in the ball after Milan’s defense failed to clear a Stefan Jovetic pass. It seemed as though the Rossoneri were headed for another defeat until Leonardo brought on Huntelaar for Gattuso with 14 minutes left on the clock and the Dutchman  responded by scoring Milan’s equaliser after a neat one- two with Ronaldinho.

Roma Lose In Greece

by Philip Mboya

High flying Roma were last night beaten 3-2 by Greek club Panathinaikos in the first leg of their Europa league last 32 tie at the Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium. This brings to an end the brilliant undefeated streak that Claudio Ranieri and his boys have enjoyed the last couple of weeks.

Ranieri will however have to answer to the fans after the Roman club threw away a 2-1 lead with only 6 minutes left in the game. Roma’s target men for the night were Mirko Vucinic and David Pizarro. Vucinic opened the scoring 30 minutes into the first half through a wonderful curling effort into the top corner that left Alexandros Tzorvas Pana goalie clearly beaten.

AS Roma kept up the pressure for 2nd spot on AC Milan after beating Palermo 4-1 yesterday in one of the only two league matches played on Saturday. The “marauding Romans”, reclaimed 2nd spot thanks to a brace from Brighi and two goals from Riise and Baptista.

Milan who had  on Friday beaten Udinese 3-2 to to Pip Roma to 2nd spot will now have to turn their minds to a crucial Champions League knockout fixture against Manchester United on Tuesday. The rossoneri buoyed by the return to form of their star Ronaldinho, will be keen on securing a victory to keep them in the hunt for the only other trophy they can possibly win.

One of my fears came true this past weekend. AS Roma leap frogged Milan into second place after the rossoneri were held to a barren draw by the unfancied Bologna on Sunday afternoon. This was another bad outing for Leonardo and it increases the number of matches he has lost in the league to two . His side’s momentum that carried them through the better part of last year, seems to have disappeared into thin air.

When the season started back in August, Roma were not even considered as potential title challengers. The string of losses that the club experienced in the first 3 months left them reeling in the wrong end of the table.  Fast forward a couple of months later and the Romans are within 8 points of leaders and defending champions Inter.

Claudio Ranieri seems to be feeding his squad with some sort of magic pill because the form they are displaying has got me really worried – considering the fact that i am a great admirer of both Milan teams. Their captain Francesco Totti is enjoying the form of his life and with 10 goals to his name, you can be sure that the former Italy international has one eye on the title.

Roma made it 16 games unbeaten in all competitions with a 1-0 defeat of nine-man Catania in the Coppa Italia quarter-finals.

Roma dominated the game but found Catania a difficult team to break-down in the first half, but things started to turn in their favor in the 59th minute when Catania defender Giuseppe Bellusci pulled down Rodrigo Taddei on the edge of the area and was shown a red card.

Roma finally got the breakthrough there play deserved 15 minutes later when Daniele De Rossi (74) drove Okaka Chuka’s cut-back into the bottom corner.

Another Loss For Juventus

by Philip Mboya

I bet Juve’s management must be in panic mode after another loss in the league. Just a couple of days ago they were on record saying that Ferrara will continue on as coach despite losing to Chievo Verona

They must really be wishing they never made such a statement. Last night, Juventus hosted AS Roma in another top flight match that saw the Romans win 2-1.

Juventus took the lead through Alessandro Del Piero in the 51st minute.Del Piero volleyed a left footer into the far corner of Julio Sergio’s goal to put the Bianconeri in front. This goal was a re-make of Del Piero’s former glory days. It just goes to show that skill is not something that can be easily lost.
